Coimbatore: Corporation officials cut the power supply to 98 houses which were built on encroached land in the Selvampathy / Muthannankulam lake.
Selvampathy pond and Kumarasamy pond are located near RS Puram. These pond's are now under the Smart City project where new parks, playgrounds and walking paths are to be built.
Houses built on the encroached land in the area are now being removed and the people who live in these settlements are being relocated to apartments built by the slum clearance board in Kovaipudur.
Likewise new flats were also allotted to the settlements near the Selvampathy pond and the people who got the flats never moved out of their settlements. The Coimbatore Corporation Officials have now decided to stop the power supply for the settlements.
The corporation officials say that the 360 families who had occupied the areas next to Selvampathy pond have been relocated now to the flats built by the Slum Clearance Board.
With 262 houses already appointed the remaining 90 families have also got their new houses. Since the people in these settlements have not relocated even after building them new houses so as a first step we have removed the electricity connection. The corporation officials also said that the settlements will be demolished once they are vacated to begin the beautification project of the Selvampathy pond.
