Coimbatore: Farmer's Association President was arrested for trying to rally in support of Delhi farmers' strike. Shanmugam from Arugampalayam near Sulur is the state president of the non-political Tamil Nadu Agricultural Association.
Shanmugam announced that he would launch a rally in Chennai in support of the ongoing farmers' struggle in Delhi to besiege the Central Government Office, Chennai Shastri Bhavan, against the 2020 Electricity Act. For this he had planned to march from Perumanallur in Tirupur district which is the memorial of Ramasamy Gounder, Marappa Gounder and Ayi Gounder who were shot dead in earlier farmers' protest.
Sulur police arrested Shanmugam, the leader of the non-political party Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association, at his residence this morning. Shanmugam started a hunger strike at the police station. Farmers Association and the Ermunai Ilaignar Ani said that despite the arrests, the rally towards Chennai will start from Perumanallur as planned. The incident in which a farmer's association leader was arrested in the early hours of the morning has caused a stir in the area.
