The Nilgiris: The Forest Department is investigating the carcass of a wild elephant found in a decomposed state in the Oosimalai forest near Karian Solai in Gudalur.

Forest officers who were patrolling the area as usual yesterday found a stench in the area. The team led by Gudalur Forest Ranger Ramakrishnan inspected the area and found the dead elephant.

They said the elephant could have died two months ago and the actual date will be found only after an autopsy. Forest activists accuse that the anti-poaching guards were not paid for 6 months and that is the reason that an elephant death was not discovered even after two months.

They also said the situation is the same across the state as anti-poaching guards are not paid well and there is not enough manpower which makes it difficult to protect the forest.
