Coimbatore: Coimbatore traders have requested that onions be imported from abroad to curb the rising prices of onions.
Coimbatore receives about 200 tonnes of large onions from outlying states including Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana. However, due to the continuous heavy rains in the northern states, the supply of onions to Coimbatore has been greatly reduced. Thus, the price of big variety is currently between Rs.70 and Rs.90 per kg.
Rajendran, president of the TK Market Vegetable Traders' Association, said, "Onion prices are likely to continue to rise for a few more days. Onions should be imported from countries including Egypt and Turkey. Otherwise, onion prices will peak in a few days. "
He said that if onions are imported, the current selling price will go down. Due to the rising onion prices, the public has also been in great trouble, he added.
