Dairy Agents Association request to private milk companies and the Government of Tamil Nadu to reduce milk price by Rs. 20

Coimbatore: Dairy Agents Association request to private milk companies and the Government of Tamil Nadu to reduce milk price by Rs. 20

Coimbatore: All private milk companies have slashed the purchase price of milk, citing the fact that tea shops and restaurants were completely closed due to the corona epidemic last March and various ceremonies, including the weddings were not happening, president of the Tamil Nadu Dairy Agents Welfare Association told reporters in Coimbatore.

Further he said: “As commercial milk sales has been severely affected, private companies refuse to purchase milk from private manufacturers, who are finding it difficult to even to afford cow feed and medical expenses.

Under the circumstances, tea shops and restaurants have started operating as usual as the Tamil Nadu government has announced several relaxations in the lockdown. Various ceremonies, including weddings, have begun to take place as they can be held with a limited number of people. With the return to normalcy in Tamil Nadu, commercial milk sales has also picked up.

However, even with increased sales, private companies are trying to make a profit by plundering the milk producers by not raising the purchase price citing the COVID curfew as the reason.

In addition, the private companies that have been claiming to be operating at a loss lure milk agents, buying more than the average quantity of milk and yoghurt with a margin of Rs. 10 to 20 and also give them incentives such as two-wheelers, gold coins, TVs, fridges, cell phones, etc. This has created rift between the milk agents. They alleged that the Tamil Nadu government and the Dairy Minister took no action.

All the private milk companies, which had claimed that milk sales had declined and suffered huge losses during the COVID-19 epidemic, have now come forward to raise the purchase price of milk, which has been reduced, on the false pretense that there was a shortage of milk production in January and February last year.

Therefore, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Dairy Agents Welfare Association, we urge all private milk companies to come forward to pay the purchase price of milk, which was reduced in January and February to the milk producers and reduce the selling price to the public to Rs. 20 per liter, taking into account the current situation.

It is also necessary to standardize the private milk companies that make unwarranted decisions of lowering the purchase price of milk and raising the selling price. The Government of Tamil Nadu should fix the maximum charges for electricity, buses, autos, the purchase and sale price of Aavin milk, the minimum support price for agricultural products such as sugarcane and paddy. The price of milk purchased and sold by private milk companies should also be regularized by the government. The TN Government should come forward to implement the several years demand of the Tamil Nadu Dairy Agents Welfare Association."
