Foresters who conducted a routine patrol in the Chinna Coonoor area found a suspicious ridge on private land. There was also a stench in the area. They dug up the area thinking that dead cattle might have been buried, but found the ivory an elephant.

They were also shocked to find an elephant buried while digging further. Top forest officials wereinformed and they rushed to the spot. Vigneswaran, Gopalakrishnan and Ajith Kumar from the area have been arrested in connection with the incident. Elephants usually come to this area from the Sigur area. The elephant that came through was electrocuted in an illegally erected electric fence.
Authorities say the elephant may have been 20 years old. Forest officials said the full details would be revealed after an autopsy as the ivory is in good condition.
