Coimbatore: Forest department are planning to cultivate favourite plants of animals. Mettupalayam Wildlife Sanctuary is an important place in the Coimbatore district. The trails here witness crossing of hundreds of elephants each month.
Elephants usually migrate from one place to another only for food and water. Environmental activists say there could be human-animal conflict if there is human presence when an elephant or other wildlife cross their path. There has been a shortage of food for wildlife for some time. Ten thousand saplings have been prepared on behalf of the forest department to resolve it. Mettupalayam Wildlife Sanctuary has 6 beats, namely Jakkanari, Kallar, Uzhikal, Sundapatti, Kandiyur and Nellimalai. The Bhavani River in the forest and the Kallar in Kotagiri which run through the forest, are used by wildlife.
Reservoirs have also been set up in the forest areas during the dry season on behalf of the forest department. The forest officials said, with the onset of the monsoon season, more than 10,000 saplings of 20 varieties of trees such as neem, figs, pungai, wild lemons, junipers and vagai have been planted in the forest. These are some of the favourite plants of a few animals.
