Coimbatore: Shallot prices have shot up due to shortage of supply. This has made the farmers happy as stocked onion fetches a good price. The price of shallots has gone up slightly due to low yield and low production. It was being sold at Rs 60 and farmers are now happy as the price has gone up to Rs. 65.

In Tirupur district, shallots are widely grown in many places including Pongalur, Koduvai, Kundadam, Palladam, and Poolavadi. The farmers had stocked shallots onions in godowns as they did not get sufficient prices. Farmers are happy now that the current stocks are being sold at affordable prices as the prices have gone up due to low supply.
Shallots are brought to the Tirupur Thennampalayam market from Tirupur and surrounding areas for sale. Over the last few days, the price has been hovering between Rs 90 and Rs 100 per kg. Traders said prices are likely to rise further due to the imminent festive season.
