Coimbatore: Demolition of houses at Muthannankulam: Police deployed as precautionary measure
Coimbatore: Demolition of houses in Muthannankulam has begun and the police are deployed for precautionary measures. There were more than 2000 houses in the Muttannankulam on Thadagam Road, Coimbatore. While most of the houses were demolished by the corporation, the same for the remaining houses was resumed today. A police force has been deployed as a precautionary measure.
Under the Smart City project, various projects are to be implemented in the Muthannankulam. Meanwhile, the people living in the area have been allotted houses in government flats in areas including Malumichampatti, Keeranatham and Kaapikadai by the Slum Clearance Board and tokens have been issued.
A few months ago, about 1,600 people vacated their homes and moved into various government quarters. Their houses were demolished in the first phase. Since then, corporation officials have been demolishing more than 400 vacant houses with the help of JCB machines since October 8. Meanwhile, the demolition of three temples at Muttannankulam is also underway. Protesting against this, the people from the area sat in front of the Muthumariamman temple and engaged in dharna on October 12.
The protestors dispersed after the police and corporation officials negotiated with them following which the demolition houses is underway. As a precautionary measure, the police have been deployed there. A corporation official said, "Demolition of houses is underway, followed by demolition of temples. Police have been called in for security as a precautionary measure."
