If you want to talk about ecosystems like elephants, tigers, leopards, birds, butterflies, then the best way is through a magazine. Chutti Yaanai is one such magazine that is released monthly. The magazine talks about the biodiversity of Tamil Nadu, from microbes to birds, animals, plants, vines, trees and other species, with a lot of fun, beautiful paintings and amazing photos.

One of the magazine articles beautifully tells the story of the evolution of elephants from the ancestors of elephants in Mauritius to the present day elephants through the mammoth. Along with elephant news, there are also unknown stories about the height of a large elephant that lived on the island of Madagascar, the elephant bird that weighs as much as a large horse, and also surprising news about the elephant trout that lives in Djibouti, Africa.

Even among the plants, there is information about the trees with elephant names such as 'Anai Kunrimani, Anai Komban Vendai, Anai Katralai, Anai Pidukkan tree and Anai Kozhinchi tree. There are also things for kids to enjoy such colouring, combining dots to create shapes, and activities that increase creativity like puzzles. It is interesting to note that everything in the magazine, including plants, birds, and animals, is associated with the elephant.

We spoke to Ashok Kumar, a nature enthusiast, to find out more about this magazine. He said that the magazine is a joint venture between nature lovers, environmental activists, storytellers and elephant enthusiasts in Tamil Nadu.

Publishers who claim to release children's magazines usually use small prints, but "Chutty Yaanai" has used large fonts throughout.
