The Nilgiris: Supreme Court reaffirms removal of resorts on Elephant Corridor in Nilgiris. The Nilgiris is home to many species of animals like elephants and leopards.

The favourable climate helps in the habitat and migration of birds and bats. But Elephant corridors were occupied and resorts were built there.

An order was issued on July 12, 2011 to seal off resorts built along the Elephant Corridor in the Nilgiris district. But petitions were filed in the Supreme Court alleging that the ban was being violated. The Supreme Court issued an order to demolish the resorts operating there. Opposing this, 34 resort owners demanded that the ban be lifted as many buildings were not in the forest.

The apex court bench headed by Justice Venkatraman, who had prepared the study on the Elephant Corridor and the illegally constructed hotels, inquired into the matter. According to the report, the buildings and hotels were located on the Elephant Corridor. Thus, based on the information in the report, the Chennai High Court had earlier ruled that the ban could not be imposed and the case was dismissed.

Environmental activists say that other regions in Nilgiris must be explored to identify elephant corridors. They say, elephant-human conflicts occur because of the buildings, restaurants, and resorts in the path used by the elephants. Therefore, public demand that the government should immediately recommend the removal of hotels that have been built in violation of the rules.
