All-union protest at NTC Mills Office in Coimbatore temporarily postponed after talks
Coimbatore: The National Textile Corporation of the Central Government owns 23 mills across the country. In Tamil Nadu, there are 5 mills in Coimbatore and a mill each in Kamudhakudi and Kalayar Kovil. These mills employ more than 6,000 workers.
The mills were closed last March due to the onset of COVID-19 and they have not been opened till now. The workers who work here are paid only half of their salaries. Hence they protested demanding that all central government mills must be fully operational as relaxations have been announced. All unions today besieged the office of the National Textile Corporation in Coimbatore with black flags in their hands, demanding full-time employment for workers.
Police and NTC officials held talks with the protestors who said they would not go back home until the mills are opened. Officials said talks would be held with the Central Joint Commissioner of Labor in Madurai on the 16th after which a decision on opening the factories would be taken. The workers then dispersed saying they are temporarily abandoning the strike and would resume if an agreement is not reached by the 17th.
