Coimbatore: Plan to use plastic waste at oil factories in Irugur Special Grade Town Panchayat
Coimbatore: Oil is extracted from plastic waste through modern technology in Irugur Special Grade Town Panchayat, Coimbatore District. Arrangements are also being made to use it for nearby businesses.
District Collector Rajamani said that biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste are collected separately in Irugur Special Grade Town Panchayat. He said there are 18 wards in the town panchayat and in those wards, compostable and non-compostable garbage is being collected from the houses. Solid waste management projects are being implemented to convert them into useful products.
The collected waste is taken to the recycling centre located on 2.75 acres of land where natural manure and vermicompost are prepared out of it.
An oil extractor worth Rs 15 lakh has been installed at the recycling centre. Up to 10 liters of oil is extracted from 50 kg of plastic waste using the oil production machine. Steps are being taken to use the oil from the plastic waste in the nearby factories.
District Collector said this can reduce land and groundwater pollution. In addition, the town panchayat can be transformed into a hygienic one that is free of plastic waste.
It is to be noted that the Coimbatore District Collector Rajamani conducted an inspection here on October 8.
