Coimbatore: Accolades are pouring in for Aliyar PWD officer for providing relief out of his pockets to 50 families during lockdown.
There are numerous tribal settlements in and around Aliyar near Pollachi. The people there work in various jobs for their livelihood, including the maintenance work of the Aliyar Park.
Due to the coronavirus lockdown announced last March, the public was banned from entering the Aliyar Dam and the park. As a result, employees doing various jobs such as park maintenance were greatly affected and gripped by poverty.
Officer Manickavel who works as an assistant engineer at the Aliyar Dam understood their plight and decided to help them out of his own savings. Knowing the needs of the affected people, he planned to provide 50 families with essential items including rice, pulses and sugar worth Rs 650 each.
Accordingly, he has provided essential items to 33 poor families in the first phase. This initiative has garnered appreciation from many quarters.
