The 93-year-old Chief Minister's mother was suffering of age related ailments and was treated at a private hospital in Salem for the past few days.
Meanwhile, at around 12.30 a.m of October 13, she passed away at the hospital. Her mortal remains was taken to their native village Siluvampalayam near Edappadi in Salem district for last rites, reports say.
The CM cancelled his trip to southern districts to conduct review meetings. He reportedly reached Salem by road from Chennai in the early hours of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, several political leaders including Opposition leader MK Stalin, leaders from the centre and public have expressed their heartfelt condolences through tweets and posts in social media pages.
