Coimbatore: At the Pollachi Gandhi Market, bananas are brought in for auction from the surrounding rural areas anddistricts including Thoothukudi and Trichy on certain days of the week.
It is customary for local and Kerala traders to come and buy it at a fixed price. This year, the supply of bananas to the market from time to time has been low as the banana harvesting work has been affected during the Southwest monsoon.
Due to the lack of rain this month, the banana harvest has been high for the last two weeks. However, during the market day yesterday, there was not much of an influx from other districts.

Due to the lack of supply, all varieties of bananas were auctioned at higher prices. While sevvazhai fetched a maximum of Rs. 1,350 per stalk, Morris was auctioned for a maximum of Rs. 600, poovan for Rs. 650, karpuravalli for Rs. 600 and rasthali for Rs. 600.
