Coimbatore: Government should provide earthen pots and stoves to the public for Pongal festival - Potters request
Coimbatore: Pottery workers have requested that the government should provide mudpots and earthen stoves to the public during the Pongal festival.

More than forty lakh people are engaged in the pottery industry throughout Tamil Nadu. In particular, Srivilliputhur, Kovilpatti, Virudhunagar and Vellore areas are heavily involved in pottery. In Coimbatore district, the Kulalar community is engaged in the pottery business in areas including Kavundampalayam, Singanallur, Vadavalli, Ganapathy and Vellalore.
Although the community has 1 lakh people, only 10,000 people are engaged in this industry and their livelihood depends on it. They petitioned the District Collector. The petition requested that TN government should provide earthen pots and stoves to the public for Pongal festival and worship places should be opened for the Karthigai Deepam festival without any restrictions.

Speaking to reporters later, Marudhachalam, district president of the Tamil Nadu Ceramics Workers Union, said the Tamil Nadu government had provided Rs 2000 to the workers who are registered with the Welfare Board.. He said it was not enough and requested for Rs 5,000 and a bundle of rice. He further said that petitions are being filed in District Collectors' Offices across Tamil Nadu.
