Public request for street lights at flyover construction sites on Coimbatore - Trichy Road

Coimbatore: Public request for street lights at flyover construction sites on Coimbatore - Trichy road

Coimbatore: As there is a risk of accidents at night due to the lack of street lights at flyover construction sites on Coimbatore-Trichy road, motorists who use the stretch regularly and the people in the locality have requested for street lights.

There are several signals at the Coimbatore-Trichy including the ones near Coimbatore Government Hospital, Sungam, Ramanathapuram and Singanallur. Thousands of vehicles pass through this road every day. Motorists suffer from heavy traffic congestion during the peak hours. So, people have been demanding for a long time that a flyover be built here. Following this, work began last year for a flyover worth 253crore on the Trichy Road.

The flyover starts near the Highway Department office on Coimbatore Trichy Road and ends at Stock Exchange near Ramanathapuram. The flyover will span over a distance of 3.1 km with 112 pillars. An overbridge with 8 pillars covering a distance of 400 meters will be constructed at Sungam for vehicles going travelling from Ramanathapuram to Ukkadam to descend to the road below.

As the Trichy road overpass works are in full swing, the street lights have been removed for the construction, but no alternate arrangements have been made. As a result, motorists suffer the most at night. People from the southern districts have to come through this road to get to the metropolitan area. Locals say this has led to a lot of accidents. Therefore, people have requested for installation of streetlights on the stretch where the construction of the overbridge is underway.
