Coimbatore: CPI(M) condemns insult to SC panchayat president in Cuddalore
Coimbatore: CPI(M) has condemned the insult to scheduled caste panchayat president in Cuddalore.
A statement released by CPI(M), reads, "Rajeswari, who belongs to a scheduled caste, has been continuously insulted after being elected as the president of Nerkuthittai panchayat in Bhuvanagiri panchayat union in Cuddalore District. She has been barred from serving as a panchayat president and has been forced to sit on the floor while others sit in chairs at the panchayat meeting. It is learned that she was not even allowed to hoist the national flag on Independence Day. Another panchayat member was also similarly insulted.
On hearing this the CPI(M) had announced a demonstration today. Getting wind of this, the police intervened immediately and filed cases against the vice president and secretary of the panchayat, but no arrests have been made so far.
Insults to local body representatives who belong to scheduled castes, not allowing them to host the national flag and obstruction of their duties are becoming a recurring theme. The Marxists condemn such incidents.
Already, more than 15 such cases have been registered and no arrests have been made. Moreover, the panchayat union officials did not take any action after learning about the incidents. Therefore, it should be considered that such incidents continue to take place with the cooperation of the officials.
Concrete action must be taken to prevent such incidents. The perpetrators should be arrested wherever such cases are registered. The state executive committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is urging the Tamil Nadu government to include the concerned panchayat union officials in the case"
