Demise of Former Marxist MLA KC Karunakaran: CPM announces three days of mourning

Coimbatore: The CPM Coimbatore district committee has announced three days of mourning in Coimbatore district following the death of KC Karunakaran, one of the senior leaders of the Marxist party.

KC Karunakaran, a former state committee member of the Marxist Party and former Coimbatore district secretary of the party and a former member of the Singanallur Legislative Assembly, passed away on Friday night.



His body was earlier kept at his Uppilipalayam residence and later brought to the Coimbatore District Committee Office of the Marxist Party in Coimbatore Gandhipuram so that Marxists and the public could pay homage to him.



Coimbatore MP Natarajan, Congress Party state acting president Mayura Jayakumar, CI district secretary VS Sundaram, MDMK executive Devasenadhipathi, CITU district leaders C Padmanabhan, S Krishnamurthy, R Velusamy and senior comrades UK Vellingiri and NV Damodaran, CPM State Committee Members K. Kamaraj and R. Badri, CPM Tirupur District Secretary S. Muthukkannan, M. Kannan, A. Radhika, Theekathir Coimbatore Edition Manager SA Manikkam, Editor-in-Chief AR Raja, staff, all party leaders, Marxist party cadres and leaders paid homage.



Following this, a funeral procession was held up to the Papanaickenpalayam Crematorium. Hundreds of people participated in it.

Earlier, a condolence meeting was chaired by CPM District Secretary V. Ramamurthy. DMK Coimbatore West District In-charge Paiya Gounder (A) R. Krishnan, District Administrator Nandakumar, Communist Party of India State Treasurer M. Arumugam, CPM Erode District Executive Committee Member K. Durairaj, Adi Tamilar Peravai Secretary Kovai Ravikumar, Dravida Tamilar Katchi's Venmani, and Dravidar Kazhagam's Nehrudas also participated and addressed the mourners.

Meanwhile, Coimbatore district secretary V. Ramamurthy said in a statement that the red flag of the Marxist party would be lowered to half mast in Coimbatore district for three days due to KC Karunakaran's death and that all party programs would be postponed for three days.
