Coimbatore: The well-known elephant doctor Dr. Krishna Murthy once treated a wild elephant in Mudumalai.
In an incident that moved many, the elephant came to Valparai after several to thank the doctor. A similar event has taken place in Coimbatore.
Mohammed Saleem, a bird and wildlife rescue worker, received a call saying that an owl had been injured in Pannaipuram, Coimbatore and that dogs were roaming around it.
To his surprise, he found that the injured bird was not an owl but a crested serpent eagle. He said, the crested serpent eagle is a bird species commonly found in the Western Ghats. He had given first aid and the bird got strong enough to fly the next morning. Surprisingly, this morning the same bird was found sitting in a tree near his house.
The bird is widespread in many parts of India. Snakes are its main food. This bird is rare in urban areas and only lives in dense forests and water bodies. It has now become a routine for wildlife species to come to urban areas in search of food and due to loss of habitat.
