The Nilgiris: After heavy rains lashed parts of the Nilgiris district on Thursday night, Collector has requested the people to shift to relief camps for food and shelter.
According to reports, more than 50 houses in Ooty's Kandhal and Greenfield areas suffered damages in the heavy rains, last night. District Collector, J Innocent Divya who visited the affected areas, discussed with the officials on rescue operations and relief measures.
Following, meteorological department's warning of heavy rains in the Nilgiris district, houses located in low-lying areas sustained severe damages in Greenfield area in Ooty.
Speaking to the press, the Collector informed that 60 mm of rain fall has been recorded, overnight. The damages are being assessed and relief measures have been kick-started on war footing.
She added that with the onset of Northeast monsoon, the Kodappamandhu canal, which causes flooding would be desilted and cleared.
The Collector also informed that enough camps are set up to accomodate people whose houses are damaged in the rains. Hence, she requested people to make use of the camps.
