Coimbatore: TPDK protested in Coimbatore condemning the transfer of police who garlanded Periyar statue.
On Periyar's birthday on September 17, people from all over Tamil Nadu paid homage to the statue of Thanthai Periyar by garlanding portraits and statues. Ranjith, Rangarajan and Ashok, three policemen from the Puthunagar police station, paid homage to the Periyar statue near the Anna Bridge in Cuddalore district.
The photo taken at the time has been uploaded on social media. Following that, the three were transferred to Kallakurichi district. When asked about this at the office of the Superintendent of Police, they said that they were transferred for administrative purposes, but with so many cops in Cuddalore, the question arises as to why only these three were transferred. Viduthalai Siruthaigal leader Thirumavalavan has condemned this.
Under the circumstances, Periyar activists staged a protest in front of the Periyar Padippagam in Coimbatore's Gandhipuram area condemning the transfers.
Speaking to media persons, TPDK General Secretary K. Ramakrishnan said that all the three policemen have been punished for garlanding the Periyar statue. He questioned whether the Tamil Nadu government has declared it a crime to garland the Periyar statue.
They accused that high-ranking police officials garland the statues of caste leaders and even participate in "thee midhi" ceremonies at temples. He questioned what is wrong in police garlanding the statue of Periyar who fought for rights to the oppressed and backward people in the secular country. He urged that the transfers of the cops who paid homage to Periyar statue should be canceled immediately.
