Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu on Thursday posted 5,088 fresh cases of COVID-19 and 68 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 6,40,943 and the State toll to 10,052 according to the State Health Department media bulletin.

The day also witnessed 5,718 patients getting discharged after recovery from various hospitals across the State.
As of October 8, cumulatively 6,40,943 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which include 10,052 deaths and 5,86,454 discharges, the Health Department said in its bulletin.
Of the new cases reported today, State Capital Chennai recorded 1,295.
Among the districts where a higher number of cases was reported, Coimbatore accounted for 448, Salem 362, Chengalpattu 363, and Thanjavur 239.
Tirupur logged a single-day spike of 173 cases and the Nilgiris 92.
According to the bulletin, the number of active cases stood at 44,437.
A total of 80,44,447 samples have been tested till date of which a whopping 87,341 were tested over the last 24 hours alone.
