Around 2,000 houses in the bank of Muthannankulam on Thadagam Road are being demolished to carry out various projects under the Smart City project.
The people who were living there have been allotted houses in government flats by the Slum Clearance Board in areas including Malumichampatti, Kiranatham and Ukkadam. Of these, about 1600 people evacuated their homes a few months ago and moved to government flats with their homes demolished in the first phase. Since then, corporation officials have been demolishing more than 400 vacant houses with the help of JCB machines.
An official of the corporation said, "The demolition of more than 400 vacant houses at Muthannankulam has begun. We plan to complete the work by next Saturday."
