Coimbatore: The Anna Market near Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore that was closed due to rising COVID-19 infections is set to reopen tomorrow with 150 shops in the first phase. This has made the market traders happy.

Anna Vegetable Market is located near Saibaba Colony, Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore. It was closed indefinitely last July after a few traders tested positive for COVID. Following this, the market was temporarily functioning at the GCT College grounds, Thadagam Road. The traders complained about water stagnation there due to the rains, which was affecting their business, and that the Anna Market be reopened with all COVID regulations in place.

Following this, Corporation Commissioner Kumaravel Pandian conducted an inspection last Saturday in connection with allowing shops to be opened in Anna Market following which the go-ahead for reopening the market was given.

Meanwhile, the Anna Market Traders Association held a consultation with the trader members. The meeting was chaired by President Suresh and Secretary Waqaf presided over. It was decided to leave one shop vacant between the two functioning shops in and conduct business with adequate social distancing.

According to traders, "476 shops are operating in Anna Market The market will open with 150 shops from tomorrow. The traders will open shops on a rotational basis. The market will be open from 3 am to 1 pm. Vehicles will not be allowed inside and the vegetables should be unloaded before 3 am. The shops will operate in compliance with all the coronavirus prevention regulations." They thanked Minister SP Velumani and the Corporation administration for allowing the shops to reopen.
