Coimbatore: "Vaergal" organisation launches online tree planting drive on Gandhi Jayanthi

Coimbatore: Former President of India Abdul Kalam has said that a man should grow at least 5 trees in his lifetime. Taking the statement as a motto, the "Vaergal" organisation has been planting trees all over the Kongu region.

Members of the organisation said they have been working with the contribution of more than 1500 volunteers for 10 years with a policy of creating a united society sans differences such as race, language and religion. They are also assisting ordinary people in other districts besides the Kongu Zone. They provide basic education to tribal peoples and conduct awareness programs for students in government schools. They are involved in planting and maintaining trees, recycling, depolluting lakes and ponds in order to create and maintain a biodiverse environment.

They usually plant trees during the rainy season, but due to the coronavirus it was not to be, so they decided to launch a scheme wherein volunteers would plant trees near their homes and take selfies and post them online. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, they announced the "Aarambam" online event today.

They said one can choose any spot of their choice to plant a sapling. Then the participant should take a selfie and post it on their Facebook or Instagram profile with #vaergalgreen and by tagging vaergalngo in Facebook and Instagram. Following this after filling https://forms.gle/h8sg1uawYNhkzmis8 and uploading the image in it, E-certificate will be issued. Every month one should click a selfie to record its growth and by the end of the year “Green Awards” will be distributed.

The members said, "This is a small effort that will make a big difference. It is extra special that Tirupur District Collector Mr. Vijayakarthikeyan planted a tree with his children, took a photo and shared it on his social media page. Many more people, volunteers, and students are planting trees, taking photos and sharing them on social media spaces."
