Coimbatore: Federation of Industrial Associations in Coimbatore demands stringent measures to eradicate corruption in allotment of new power line connections

Coimbatore: Union Ministry of Electricity has released a pre-draft report on the rights and regulations of consumers. It has also sought the views of industrial bodies on the report.

A letter has been sent to the Union Ministry of Power on behalf of Federation of Industrial Associations in Coimbatore. It said that many micro and small entrepreneurs complain of corruption in acquiring new connections or additional connections. In most cases, the costs of bringing in and constructing transformers and poles are imposed on micro and small businesses.

They have asked thaat strict provisions be made in the draft to eradicate corruption in allotment of new power line connections and officers who fail to provide new connections within the specified time limit should be fined. It stated that there is a concessionary tariff for electricity used by factories at night in the state of Gujarat. Sub-rules should be included in the draft rules to implement this nationwide. This will reduce the electricity bills of micro and small enterprises and balance the consumption of electricity by reducing the peak demand.

The letter also said the provision of 30 to 45 days to address consumer grievances should be scrapped. It said if it takes such a long time to get rid of the grievances when the consumer is in a great crisis, the factory might even be forced to shut its operations down and hence the time limit for resolving grievances should be reduced to around 7 to 10 days.
