The Nilgiris: A rare species of butterfly has been recorded after an interval of 130 years in the Nilgiris. Wildlife enthusiasts are delighted with the news.

The Nilgiris district is home to several species of wildlife and is rich in biodiversity. Birds and butterflies have an optimal climate to live in, even though it often rains. There are still many unrecorded species in the Western Ghats.

Today, there is a threat of global warming, climate change, deforestation, and so on. Butterflies circumstantially forewarn about these risks almost immediately. Excessive butterfly growth means fertile forests. This biodiversity zone is almost a chain-like structure that helps in maintaining good rainfall and keeping the environment in balance.

Vinod Sriramulu, an administrator at the Wynter-Blyth Association, photographed the branded royal (Tajuria melastigma) butterfly, which is rare in India. He said the butterfly that was recorded in India in 1888 by G. F. Hamson has been spotted again only in 2020. It is found only in Nilgiris, Dindigul, Kerala and Karnataka. Branded royal is a very rare species and it lays eggs only on a rare species of plant too.

It is the only butterfly to have lived after 130 years as the conditions for them to live in the area are excellent. The area is likely to become lush due to the presence of such rare species and dependent plants. He said it is necessary to study them and make arrangements to protect them.
