The Ukkadam-Athupalam road is the main road to Pollachi and Kerala. Construction work on the 1.9-km flyover between Ukkadam and Athupalam began in April 2018 in order to resolve heavy traffic congestion on the stretch.
In the first phase, Rs 216 crore was allocated for the overbridge work between Ukkadam and Karumbukadai and 55 pillars have been erected up to Karumbukadai and the work of laying the road upon them is in full swing. Work is also in progress to set up a roundabout on the flyover near the Ukkadam bus stand.
According to the State Highways Department, the first phase of the flyover between Ukkadam and Karumbukkadai is 65 percent complete. Work on the flyover near the bus station is underway in full swing and will be completed within 6 months. Meanwhile, the second phase of overbridge work is expected to start soon.
Highway officials said, "Landings are to be set up at three places on the Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover for the convenience of motorists and to avoid traffic congestion on the flyover. U-shaped ramps and landings are to be set up in three areas including Podanur, Athupalam and Ukkadam bus stand. Vehicles coming from Pollachi can use the Podanur Pirivu landing at Townhall. Ukkadam bus stand landing will lead Sungam Bypass and Athupalam landing to the Palakkad road. This will reduce traffic congestion and benefit motorists."
