Coimbatore: There was commotion as municipality officials sealed shops in Sulur that were kept open beyond stipulated time.
The government has announced that all shops except pharmacies will be closed at 8 pm in a bid to control the spread of coronavirus. The Sulur police inspector inspected the Sulur area on the 26th after the Sulur municipality and police had been making announcements for the past few days. A warning was issued as some bakeries and restaurants were open after 9 p.m.
Sulur Police Inspector Sundarapandian submitted a report to the Municipal Executive Officer yesterday to take action in this regard.

Municipal EO Senthilkumar sealed the shops today following an inspection of the shops that were open after the stipulated time. One of the sealed shops belongs to DR Chandrasekhar, the regional chairman of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Associations. Following this, the next morning the members of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Associations besieged the office of the Sulur Municipality.
A petition was submitted to Senthilkumar, Executive Officer, Sulur Municipality, headed by Iruthaya Raja, Coimbatore District Chairman, Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Associations. They argued with the EO that the closure of the shops was a disgrace to them and that the shops which were kept open in violation of the rules should be fined and not sealed. Following this, the police negotiated peace and sent him away. The EO said that he had acted upon a report by the Sulur Police Inspector and three shops that were functioning after eight o'clock in the evening were inspected and sealed.
The sealed shop staff said that the Sulur police had come to the shop after business hours on Saturday night and asked for the items. They said there was an argument between the shop staff as they were asked to come the next day since they were taking stock of the goods at the time. The police in return had threatened to seal their shops.
