Coimbatore Collector writes to TN Government to facilitate retention of full capacity at Siruvani Dam

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Collector has written to TN Government to facilitate retention of full capacity of water at Siruvani Dam.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Collector has written to TN Government to facilitate retention of full capacity of water at Siruvani Dam.

A team of TWAD officials held talks with officials from Kerala government to prevent the release of water from the Siruvani dam without allowing it to reach full capacity. Under the circumstances, Coimbatore District Collector K. Rajamani has sent a letter to the Tamil Nadu government requesting action be taken to keep the Siruvani dam at its full capacity.

Siruvani Dam is the main source of drinking water for the city of Coimbatore and its suburbs. Siruvani drinking water is distributed to more than 20 villages in 36 wards under Coimbatore Corporation. The water level of the dam is rising rapidly as the southwest monsoon has been intensifying since last July. Kerala authorities released water into the river last week to prevent the Siruvani dam from reaching its full capacity. This action came as a shock to the TWAD Board. Hence a six-member team comprising TWAD officials visited Kerala last week and held talks with the irrigation authorities there.

In the letter, District Collector Rajamani has urged the TN government to take action to retain the full capacity of the Siruvani dam.
