Coimbatore: Biomining at Vellalore landfill in Coimbatore will begin soon, said P. Kumaravel Pandian, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer.
The Vellalore landfill under the Coimbatore Corporation covers an area of 650 acres. About 850 to 1000 tons of garbage collected daily from the corporation areas is dumped here.
The areas around the Vellalore dump yard including Konavaikkalpalayam, Anbunagar, LG Nagar, Sriram Nagar, Kanjikonam Palayam, Siddhanapuram, and Arputham Nagar house around 1.5 lakh people in 25,000 houses in the above areas.
Due to the rubbish piled up in this landfill, the stench continues to spread throughout the surrounding areas. In this context, Rs. 60.16 crore has been approved for biomining the waste.
The tender was awarded to a private company to implement the project. Prior to the commencement of the project, a team of experts from Anna University, Chennai was invited to inspect the waste brought to Vellalore. The experts were slotted to study the amount of waste coming in, the amount ofbiodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and prepare a study report in accordance with the biomining method. Based on this report, the biomining machinery would be installed. The team has now completed the study.
Corporation Commissioner Kumaravel Pandian said, "The panel of experts has completed the study. Work on the machinery related to biomining will begin soon and the system will be operational then."
