Coimbatore: A woman tried to commit suicide by pouring petrol on herself before the Collector's Office demanding action against her husband for asking dowry.
Chitra, a 20-year-old woman from Karamadai, came to the Coimbatore District Collector's Office with a petrol can. Seeing the police checking everybody who was entering the Collector office, she immediately poured petrol on herself and tried to immolate herself. She was apprehended by a police officer and took her to the Gandhipuram All Women's Police Station.
Chitra has been living alone since her mother, father and brother died.
Chitra is married to Gowri Shankar who has been allegedly torturing her for dowry. He has allegedly broken her arm while abusing her physically. Gowri Shankar is said to have married Chitra after a failed marriage attempt with another woman who ran away just before marriage. Following this, Gowri Shankar has been married to Chitra for the past three months.
In this situation, Gowri Shankar has beaten Chitra and tortured her by breaking her arm by asking for a dowry of 50 thousand rupees.
Chitra who came to lodge a complaint with the Coimbatore District Collector's Office has attempted suicide and this incident caused a stir in the area.
