Coimbatore: The 230 crore developmental project in Noyyal will destroy its biodiversity - MLA N. Karthik

Coimbatore: MLA N. Karthik accused of destroying the biodiversity at the Noyyal river with the 230 crore developmental project wastingtaxpayers' money.

In this connection, DMK Coimbatore East District Officer N. Karthik MLA said in his Facebook post that the Public Works Department and the Coimbatore Corporation are widening and rehabilitating the Noyyal river.

He said, Minister SP Velumani had issued a statement regarding the work by the Public Works Department making it clear who was behind the project. He further accused that the ruling party in view of the election has jumped into this project without major research or planning which is spoiling the ecosystem of the Noyyal river with the 230 crore development work.

He added that the project is being carried out without any preparation like dredging, restoring streams, improving ecosystem in the catchment areas, removing encroachments, increasing capacity in ponds and so on. He said that they are wasting taxpayers' money by carrying out the project without proper preparation. He also accused of pouring concrete into the ponds without following any guidelines from the Central Government and spoiling biodiversity. He also said the ruling party is making several schemes that harm not only people but also biodiversities.

He further said people living in thatched huts in the area are made to evacuate and construction equipment are brought to build sheds. He said concrete is poured on to the land preventing water seepage in the land. He said court order was defied which has stated that the pond capacity must not be reduced. Hr accused that in Ukkadam Periyakulam, work is underway to raise the wall with concrete mixes and construct a tar road to reduce the catchment area. He said the catchment area has shrunk and old trees were removed disrupting the waterways there to Perur Chottayandi pond and the Periyakulam pond.

He said no farmers, opposition, activists were consulted or a public statement was released in regard to this project and it is being carried purely based on their authority. He said all the contractors for the project are being selected on the basis of their affinity towards the ruling party and other members were sidelined. He accused the ruling party of trying to beautify places that had lost lustre by adding attractive infrastructure thereby destroying the ecosystem of the Noyyal river which is known as the youngest daughter of Cauvery. He said they can no longer tolerate the wasting of taxpayers money. He also warned that if proper action is not taken they are ready to take this up judicially.
