Coimbatore: Indigo Airlines breaks its own record in cargo handling on passenger aircraft at Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Indigo Airlines broke its own record in cargo handling on passenger aircraft at Coimbatore.
Cargo handling is done both in the domestic and international sector at the Coimbatore International Airport. There are two types of flights namely, all cargo flights which are exclusively meant for cargo handling and passenger flights in which limited belly space is allotted for cargo.
Usually passenger aircrafts, apart from accommodating the passengers' baggage, load a maximum of 3.5 to 4 tons of cargo. Recently, Indigo Airlines set a new record by air lifting 7.2 tons of cargo in a passenger flight in which more than 100 passengers were on board. A few days after the company broke its own record again by an upward margin of around 100 kg. Subsequently, another record-breaking attempt resulted in 7.8 tonnes being handled.
This being the case, Indigo airlines broke its previous three records by airlifting 8.2 tonnes of cargo in a passenger flight.
Airport sources said, "Only 3.5 to 4 tonnes of cargo would be loaded usually. Recently, Indigo airlines made three records by loading 7.2 tonnes, 7.3 tonnes and 7.8 tonnes in the passenger flights which departed to Delhi from Coimbatore.
On September 23, the Indigo airlines broke all its previous records by loading 8.2 tonnes of Cargo inside a passenger flight, which departed to Delhi at 9:45pm. Cargo consisted of automobile parts, perishable cargo, valuable cargo and textiles. The aircraft carried more than 50 passengers too. It has once again been established that more volume of cargo can be handled in a passenger flight which has a very small belly space after accommodating passengers' luggage. Another highlight of the day (September 23) is that Coimbatore Air Cargo Complex handled 26 tonnes of cargo which is the highest on a single day since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic."
