Coimbatore: Coimbatore GH treats 45 children with bowlegs during the COVID-19

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Government Hospital has so far treated 45 children with bowlegs during the coronavirus period.

Children suffering from congenital bowlegs are treated at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital every week on Thursdays through a special camp on behalf of the Department of Rheumatology. As such, the children with this affliction are treated at special camps on Thursdays even during the ongoing pandemi. Dr. Vetrivel, Professor, Department of Rheumatology said that children born with this anomaly may have acquired it by keeping their feet in such a position throughout pregnancy. One foot of such children are slightly turned inward.

This birth defect, which affects about one in a thousand babies, can be corrected non-surgically through contemporary treatment. This therapy involves giving gentle exercises to the baby's feet weekly and by using POP bandages.

Children are sent home only after their parents receive instructions on the methods to follow in order to maintain steady blood flow in their toes. The treatment rectifies the arch foot gradually and brings it to a uniform position, but there are possibilities that the foot may return to its previous position. Therefore, special shoes are provided to prevent the foot slipping back into the old condition. This shoe is provided free of charge at the GH. Surgery is done for children who fail treatment/

About 400 children with bowlegs have been successfully treated at the Coimbatore Government Hospital so far including the 45 that were treated during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
