Bengaluru-based biotech firm employee from Coimbatore turns poet, publishes an anthology called "Once Upon a Confinement"
Coimbatore: Abishek Ram from Coimbatore, a biotech firm employee who is currently working at Bengaluru, has turned a poet. He has written and published an anthology of poems called "Once Upon a Confinement."
Speaking to SimpliCity, he said "I am from Coimbatore and I work for a biotech firm in Bengaluru. I have recently launched my first book which is a collection of lockdown poems under the name "Once Upon a Confinement."
He said, "I am passionate about writing. I have been writing for many years, but this is my first book. When I was 14 years old, I was inspired by the legendary American poet, Robert Frost’s 1916 poem, 'The Road Not Taken'. Since then I started writing poems."
He added, "The book is a collection of 50 lockdown poems written in the backdrop of the nationwide lockdown in India which was declared on March 25th 2020, in the wake of COVID-19 global pandemic. The poems are written in first and third person narratives, of six quatrains each. They are inspired from real Indian news reports published during the days of the lockdown, in print, digital and the electronic media. From the morning newspaper on the coffee table, from the TV and the computer screens, they flow down taking the form of poetry, and get collected as a book."
He further said "All the fifty poems in this collection attempt to provide pictures of the lockdown from various eyes, its effects, the affected and they finally try to emphasize not just the pain and struggle of the affected, but also their hope and resilience. They are voices of the migrant laborers forced to go back to their native towns and villages bereft of their livelihoods, many walking hundreds of kilometres under the scorching summer sun, while some cycle the same distances for days and a few even braving the deep sea to sail back home. The poems also introduce to the readers, the commoners who get stuck at state borders and at unfamiliar railway stations during the lockdown. Some poems speak about the pain suffered by the frontline warriors like doctors and the injustices meted out to them by the society. Even the coronavirus has something to say, as a poem in this book. The book couldn’t have been written without the role of the media – print, electronic and digital."
He added that the book which was launched as a paperback late in August is currently available on Amazon and will soon be made available in stores like Odyssey.
