Coimbatore: All India Democratic Women's Association besiege Coimbatore Collectorate seeking action against microfinance companies that threaten borrowers

Coimbatore: All India Democratic Women's Association besieged Coimbatore Collectorate seeking action against microfinance companies that threaten borrowers.

During the coronavirus lockdown the central government gave time for repayment of loan installments to the public who have taken loans from bank and microfinance institutions. Various parties have accused that women's self-help groups were threatened by microfinance companies across Tamil Nadu.

All India Democratic Women's Association has already filed a petition with the respective district collectors across the state. Allegations contine that employees of microfinance institutions keep visiting the houses of the borrowers at all times of the day and demand that they pay money immediately.

Under the circumstances, more than 20 people, led by Radhika, the Coimbatore district secretary of the All India Democratic Women's Association, besieged the district collector's office this morning and tried to protest. The police detained them.

Demonstrators agitated for a while and they suddenly indulged in a sit-in protest at the road in front of the BSNL office near the Collector's office.

The sudden roadblock caused traffic congestion in the area for about half an hour. They then petitioned the District Collector to take appropriate action against the microfinance institutions and give borrowers 6 months' time to repay the loans.
