Allegations of Kerala not allowing Siruvani to reach full capacity: TN officials hold talks with Kerala counterparts

Coimbatore: A team of 6 officials from the The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board held talks with their Kerala counterparts yesterday regarding water released from Siruvani Dam by Kerala government without allowing it to reach the full capacity.

Siruvani Dam is the main source of drinking water in Coimbatore. Water from the dam is distributed to more than 20 villages along the route and 36 wards under Coimbatore Corporation. The water level of the dam is rising rapidly due to the intense southwest monsoon. At the present time, the water level of the dam has risen to 877.20 meters due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the dam. With only 1.65 meters of water needed for full capacity of the dam, the current level of the dam is 45 feet. Under the circumstances, Kerala authorities have released 2 meters of water, preventing the dam from reaching its full capacity.

This week, the move by Kerala officials came as a shock to the TWAD Board officials, who were expecting the dam to fill up. Following this, a six-member team of TN officials visited Kerala yesterday and held talks with the state irrigation authorities.

A TWAD official said, "A six-member of TWAD board officials from Coimbatore held talks with Kerala officials. They insisted that water should be released from the dam only after the dam reaches its full capacity. They said they will speak to the Government and let us know."
