Coimbatore: Butterfly festival in India is in full swing and voting for the selection of national butterfly is taking place. Though several people in India are familiar with national symbols, all don't know what the national butterfly is. Many birds and butterflies are migrating to India due to the favourable climate and biodiversity. About 1300 to 1400 species of butterflies live in our country. Since it is impossible to choose a butterfly as a national butterfly, an expert panel of 50 people has been set up for this.

The annual Butterfly Festival is held around the world and it is held for the first time in India. Butterfly Festival was held in September with more than 50 voluntary organizations in India to find out about the butterflies' arrival after the monsoon. Events like Videography, Poetry Competition, Painting Competition, Quiz, and Butterfly Survey are held all over India. Not only this, they are also offering free expert consultation and online certification training. The butterfly survey will be held from September 14 to 20 in the respective towns. It takes place all over Indiaand all ages can participate. Also, before surveying the butterflies, the time, arrival time, number of butterflies, photo should be recorded and posted on websites like butterflies of india, inaturalist, india biodiversity portal to know its biology.

How is the national butterfly chosen?

Butterfly researchers, writers and activists from all over India have formed a team of 50 people. Saran from Tamil Nadu, one of the members in the group, said Butterfly enthusiasts and researchers have been coming from all over India for the last 10 years.

In order to promote awareness about butterflies, it was decided that the National Butterfly would be selected for this Butterfly Festival and a group of 50 butterfly enthusiasts and researchers from India started a selection of 3 butterflies per person with 8 stipulations. Each selected butterfly must have an international, cultural and environmental protection element that is attractive to all, it must have the biological aspect, should be easily identifiable by the general public and must be easily recognizable and memorable. Also the selected butterfly species should not have different shapes, should not be harmful and not be a state butterfly. Based on this, eight butterflies including Common Jezebel, Five-bar Swordtail, Krishna Peacock, yellow gorgon, Common Nawab, Northern Jungle Queen and Orange Oakleaf have been finalized.

He said, "We have published a collection of details on social media for voting. Everyone can vote as an environmental activist, butterfly enthusiast, researcher. A selected butterfly will be sent to the Central Ministry of Environment. He said the National Butterfly for India would be announced by the Union Minister later this year or next year."

Manoj from the Nilgiris, one of the members in the group said, "Our aim is to raise awareness by taking information about the butterfly to all. It is as essential to have a national butterfly as it is to be a national animal, a national bird. He said that the young generation should choose the national identity for us."
