Coimbatore: It was expected Coimbatore would receive 188 mm of Southwest monsoon rains on average, but the average has exceeded to 269 mm due to more than expected heavy rains.

The southwest monsoon has intensified in Coimbatore filling up the water bodies in Coimbatore, including Ukkulam, Sengulam, Perur Periyakulam, Kurichi Kulam and many other water bodies. Noyyal River is witnessing a flow 450 cubic feet of water per second. Officials said that the groundwater level in Coimbatore has also risen significantly due to continuous rains.

Ramanathan, head of the Centre for Climate Research at the Coimbatore Agricultural University, said, “The southwest monsoon rains in Coimbatore district averaged 188 mm, but this year the average was 269 mm, compared to 22.5 mm in June and 83.5 mm in July. The state has received 49.5 mm of rainfall in August and 113.5 mm of rainfall so far this month".

He added that therefore samba crops can be cultivated. Due to the intensity of Southwest monsoon, the Ukkadam Periyakulam and Valankulam ponds in Coimbatore are 85 per cent full and the Vellalore Periyakulam 80 per cent full. These are expected to reach full capacity soon.
