Coimbatore: Aliyar Dam reaches full capacity: 2629 CFT water per second released through sluices
Coimbatore: Aliyar Dam reached full capacity as result of which 5.2629 cubic feet of excess water is released per second as a precautionary measure through the five sluices of the dam.
Areas in the Western Ghats near Pollachi have been receiving continuous rains for the last few days. Due to this water inflow from the catchment areas of Valparai, Kadamparai and Upper Aliyar in the foothills of the Western Ghats is increasing.
Due to the heavy rains, the water level of the Aliyar Dam next to Pollachi rose sharply to its full capacity of 120 feet.
Thus, considering the safety of the dam, 2629 cubic feet of surplus water per second is being released through its five sluices. Public works officials said, "At present, the dam has an inflow of 5,000 cubic feet per second, which is likely to increase the release."
Police and the Public Works Department have been warning people near the dam to be safe through loudspeakers. The continuous rains have thrilled the farmers of Aliyar.
