Weekly Domestic freighter aircrafts from Coimbatore is the need of the hour - Industrialists

Coimbatore: The cargo section at the Coimbatore International Airport has been witnessing an exponential growth. Majority of the cargo handled involves transportation of industrial goods. Just over the past three days, 75 tonnes of cargo have been moved in the domestic sector. Under the circumstances, introduction of domestic freighter aircrafts (exclusively for transportingcargo) is the need of the hour.

Coimbatore airport handles cargo services both in domestic and international sectors to various destinations. Since the onset of Covid-19 outbreak, the cargo section has been experiencing a steady influx.

Airport sources said, "Coimbatore International Airport has huge potential in the areas of passengers and cargo. Despite this, only three international services are provided to Singapore, Sharjah and Colombo. The Integrated Air Cargo Complex is providing services to various international destinations with the help of 'Bonded Truck Operation' wherein cargo booked at Coimbatore is sent through trucks to various other airports from where it is airlifted by many foreign airlines to various destinations across the globe.

When cargo transportation resumed during the ongoing pandemic, Coimbatore managed to send goods to destinations such as Sharjah, Singapore, Dubai, Brunei etc.

When it comes to the domestic sector, industrial goods occupy more than 60% of the cargo handled. Goods such as automobile spare parts, engineering parts and tools are booked more. There is a very huge room in this area. Therefore,

Domestic Freighter Aircraft at least once in a week could do wonders. Companies such as Blue Dart and Spice Express' can operate these freighters, especially between Coimbatore and Mumbai and Delhi.

During the initial days of the resumption of cargo handling operations, 10 to 12 tonnes were handled while around 20 to 25 tonnes are handled now. Past three days alone witnessed handling of 75 tonnes of cargo (25 tonnes per day)."

Kongu Global Forum (KGF) Director, D. Nanda Kumar said, "Coimbatore international airport is witnessing a steady growth both in passenger and cargo segments every year. Tamil Nadu government and Minister Velumani are helping a lot in implementing new schemes and gearing up various infrastructural development projects across Kongu region which covers Seven districts including Coimbatore. We have already taken the airport issues to the knowledge of Chief Minister and Minister Velumani. They showed interest and have geared up the process. Civil Aviation ministry and Airport Authority of India should also help in sorting out all the issues such as 'Point of Call' etc which would make the introduction of new international services possible. Airport expansion also would help to get wide body aircrafts which will be very useful for both passengers and cargo services in the international sector."
