Coimbatore: Rajya Sabha passed The Farmers' and Produce Trade and Commerce Bill 2020 and Farmers Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill 2020 even as the opposition parties including Congress rushed to the Well of House in protest of the bills in view of which proceeding have been adjourned till 9 AM tomorrow.

The opposition accused that the bills are a "death warrant" to the farmers and will benefit only the big corporates. Congress MP Pratap Singh Bajwa called the farm sector bills passed by the Rajya Sabha today as an attack on farmers' souls. He said, "Farmers are not illiterate. They understand that this is a way to do away with MSP (Minimum Support Price). Once this is passed, slowly, the government will come out of this and then Ambani, Adani and big corporate houses will enter the market."

Congress and other opposition parties including DMK, CPI, CPIM, and BJP's ally Shiromani Akali Dal have been vehemently opposing the three farm sector bills, which were recently cleared in the Lok Sabha despite widespread protests in a lot of Indian states.

Farmers' unions across the county have raised apprehensions that provisions in these bills would lead to discontinuation of government support in buying their produce, leaving them vulnerable in the open market. Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi had tweeted that the system of minimum support price would continue, he is yet to make a statement in the parliament, as pointed out by MP Bajwa today.
