Corporation Commissioner conducts review meeting on solid waste management in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Corporation Commissioner, P Kumaravel Pandian, conducted a review meeting on solid waste management at the Central Zonal Office of Coimbatore Corporation today.

He said, "Garbage collected from houses by the sanitary staff in all the 5 zones of Coimbatore Corporation and garbage collected through the vehicles is taken to the place where it is transferred to Peelamedu and Ukkadam. Later it is taken to the Vellalore landfill with the help of heavy vehicles. Garbage is sorted and composting is done."

He said that micro composting centers in Coimbatore should operate on Sundays too and arrangements should be made to remove garbage by vehicles. He added that the garbage disposal station on Sathy Road‌ should be brought into use and the garbage collected at home should be classified as degradable and non-degradable while being transported. He further added that, non-degradable garbage from shopping malls and shops should be collected and disposed of once a week and sanitary staff should ensure that everyone has glow uniforms. He asked for collection of ward-wise details of trash bins for houses and instructed to spray mosquito repellent in areas where water stagnates.



The Commissioner also instructed people to keep the environment clean and to dispose of degradable and non-degradable waste separately. He instructed to place large billboards on the roads urging not to dump rubbish on the roadsides and to keep the roads clean by using waste bins.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner of the Corporation S. Madhuranthagi, City Engineer A. Lakshmanan, Urban Welfare Officer Raja, Assistant Administrative Engineer, Assistant Engineer, Zonal Health Officers and Health Inspectors.
