Five special trains have been in operation from Coimbatore since the 7th of this month. Of these, four run from Coimbatore to Chennai and one to Mayiladuthurai.
A special train that leaves Coimbatore at 6.15 am and reach Chennai Central at 1.50 pm. The Coimbatore-Mayiladuthurai Special leaves Coimbatore at 7.10 am and reaches Mayiladuthurai at 1.40 pm.
The Intercity train leaves Coimbatore at 3.15 pm and reaches Chennai at 11 pm. The superfast express leaves Mettupalayam at 7.45 pm and reaches Chennai Central at 4.50 am the next day. A special superfast train leaves Coimbatore at 10.40 pm and reaches Chennai at 6.35 am the next day.
Passengers who book to travel on these special trains are asked to arrive at the station 90 minutes before the scheduled departure and are allowed to board the train only after thermal scanning.
According to a railway official, "Of the five special trains from Coimbatore - Mayiladuthurai, Coimbatore Intercity, Mettupalayam - Chennai special trains carry between 2,700 and 3,000 thousand passengers daily. Coimbatore-Chennai night express trains carry between 1,500 and 1,700 passengers. A maximum of 4,700 passengers travel daily and cumulatively up to 45,000 passengers have travelled in these trains from September 7 to 16."
