Coimbatore: Annapoorni (23), daughter of Rangaraj from Rangarajapuram Main Road, Kodambakkam, Chennai, was married to Rithish, son of Srikanth and Kalpana from Arul Garden, Selvapuram Ramamurthy Road, Coimbatore on July 1, 2018. The wedding reception was held in Coimbatore on July 8, 2018.

Rithish's parents sell zodiac stones through their company, Pancharatna Gems, in Coimbatore. During the wedding, Annapoorni's family allegedly gave dowry worth 2 kg of gold jewellery, 58 kg of silverware, 66 carat diamond jewellery, gifts worth several lakhs of rupees, household items and costumes to the groom's family.

Three months after the marriage, it was alleged that Annapoorni was demanded more jewellery, money and a car..

Parents alleged that Annapoorni's health deteriorated after which they sent her to Chennai to her parents' home on April 10 of this year citing her ill health as the reason. When Annapoorni tried to return to her husband, his family did not respond properly and answer phone calls from Annapoorni and her family members.

Under the circumstances, when Annapoorni tried getting back to her husband's home on May 8 of this, his parents chased her away. Following this, Annapoorni filed a case at the Family Welfare Court in Chennai in order to live with her husband. She alleges that hearing this, Rithish and his family threatened Annapoorni and demanded more dowry. She alleges in her complaint that they told her that they have immense political power and she better be careful.

Following this, Annapoorni filed a case at the Coimbatore Additional Mahila Court.

The judge who took the case for trial ordered Inspector Prabha Devi at Coimbatore RS Puram All Women's Police Station to register a case. Following this, a case has been filed against Rithish, his mother Kalpana and father Srikanth under sections 498A, 323 and 506 (2) for allegedly torturing Annapoorni for dowry.

Even as the court's order to register a case for dowry harassment has caused a furore, posters accusing Annapoorni's husband and in-laws of dowry harassment have been put up in several places at Gandhipuram alleging dowry harassment. This has caused a stir in the area.

Rubbishing the allegations, Rithesh's father Srikanth said while the case is subjudice, Annapoorani's family have done this to defame their family's name.

He further clarified that they have handed over all the jewels and things given by her parents, as marriage gift. The girl's parents have also acknowledged the same in writing on August 30, 2019 to the All Women Police Station (West), here.
