The Nilgiris: Alleging that private bank and microfinance employees spoke derogatorily while demanding loan payments, members of Women's Self-Help groups held them captives.

Many Women's Self-Help groups have taken loans from private banks and microfinance companies in the Nilgiris District. Currently, all other tourist spots other than the parks under the Horticulture Department are closed. As a result of this, many people have lost their livelihood.

This being the case, bank employees have been bothering women at Kaandhal in Ooty. Alleging that the bank employees spoke derogatorily and demanded money until nightfall, women in the area held them captive.

Upon receiving information, police arrived and negotiated with them. The women stated that due to the pandemic, tourism based businesses have taken a hit and so they requested two months' time to pay back the money.

Following this, a bank manager and the women who had taken loans were asked to come to the police station for negotiations. The police assured that an amicable solution would be reached following which the women dispersed. This incident caused tense moments in the area.
