Coimbatore: GST officials conducted raids at four brick kilns operating at Thadagam and the offices of the kiln proprietors. GST and Central Excise Joint Commissioner in a press release said that incriminating documents pertinent to GST evasion have been confiscated.

The press note reads, "Based on the intelligence received and developed by this office it was noticed that a lot of brick kiln units located in and around Coimbatore have either not taken registration prescribed under Section 22 of the CGST Act, 2017 nor those that have taken registration have discharged the applicable duty as prescribed under section 9 of the CGST Act, 2017.

Building bricks attracts 5% GST. The units under the survey have been clandestinely removing the bricks without discharging the applicable tax causing substantialrevenue loss to the Exchequer.

Based on the above information, today i.e., 17.09.2020, a team of 60 officers conducted simultaneous searches at the factory, residences and offices of four major brickmanufacturers located in the Thadagam area.

During the searchmanyincriminating documentsandmaterials exhibiting the tax evasion have been seized . The quantum of evasion is being ascertained and may run into a few crores. Further investigation is on. Manyother units who have not registered/not discharging proper duty are also under the scanner of the department."
